While it can become easy to mix up Categories and Segments, these are two very different ways to distinguish subscribers from one another and help to personalize content for your audience.
Interested in the quick answer? Segments differ from categories in that users choose to opt-into content that pertains to specific categories, where as segments can only be dictated by the admins of the Cerkl account.
Need a bit more information?
Here it is:
Segments should be definitive groups within your audience that you occasionally want to explicitly communicate with or have the option to measure this specific groups analytics (i.e. engagement, open rate, click through, personalization rate etc.). 'Board of Directors' is a great example, sometimes you may only want to send your board a certain story so you can limit a piece of content to their segment. However, on your Board of Directors there are MANY categories that they are interested in. You will find out what Categories they are interested in when they complete the Welcome Email and as they click on content within your newsletters.
You can find your Cerkl's segments under Settings > Automated Email > Segments. Then, when adding a subscriber under Audience Manager > Add Subscriber, you can select the Segment you want to place the subscriber.
The best way to think of Segments is as your subscriber demographics (i.e. age, sex, location, profession, etc.). At Cerkl, we use segments to differentiate the industry of our partners. Click here for more information on Segments.
Categories, on the other hand, are decided based on the main topics your organization covers and subscribers can/will move to and out of interest based categories due to their engagement with a certain topic (i.e. I was once interested in a certain category BUT my interests have changed over time - now my Cerkl powered newsletter will reflect my new interests).
When a subscriber personalizes they are able to select the categories they are both interested or not interested in.
Cerkl will also start to suggest new Categories for you, based on the interests of your audience and the billions of keywords that our AI will check your content against.
You can access Categories by selecting the top-left dropdown menu and clicking Settings > General > Categories. To learn more about categories, click here.
