Organizations may utilize multiple Cerkl instances to reach specific audiences and meet unique branding and communication standards. When an Organization has multiple instances that are connected, they are done so using Parent and Child instances.

A Parent Cerkl is the primary instance where Child Cerkl settings are dependent.

A Child Cerkl is a unique but related instance that is dependent on the settings of the parent. Audience Members may be managed by the Parent Cerkl, allowing for consistent control over certain communication standards. Branding settings, content, etc are all unique to this instance.

Child Audience Settings

Team Members with full Administrator permissions can see the Parent/Child icon (boxed in red above) located at the top right of the screen. This allows you to access your Child Audiences page where you can review the Children Instances to the Parent Instance, disable audience controls, and managed audience sync settings.

Managed Audience Cerkls

If your Child Cerkl is managed by your Parent Cerkl (no controls have been disabled), it will appear under the tab labeled “Managed.” With a managed Child Cerkl, you will not be able to add Subscribers directly to your Child Cerkl Subscriber list - Subscribers will need to be available in the Parent Cerkl and added to a Segment assigned to the managed Child Cerkl.

After clicking the Parent/Child icon, under the Managed tab, there are two available options for altering a Child Cerkl: Disable Control or Update Audience.

Update Audience

Segments used in the Parent Organization can also be used in a related Managed Child Organization. Administrators of a Parent Organization can easily set Segments created in the Parent Audience to sync to a Managed Child.

This pop-up window allows you to add or remove Segments that are assigned to this Child Cerkl.

  • To Remove an existing Segment: click the X to the right of the Segment name.

  • To Add a New Segment: click the drop-down arrow to the right of the Segment name and choose a Segment from the list.

Once you have made your changes to the assigned Segment, click Save. The corresponding Subscribers will then be added to/removed from your Child Audience based on the Parent Audience list. If you would like to update the Subscribers inside this Segment, that must be done in the Parent Cerkl.

Please Note: Whenever you update a Segment in a Parent Cerkl that is connected to a Child Cerkl, the Subscribers in the Child Cerkl will also be updated.

Disable Control

This pop-up window gives you two options:

  • Disable control and Keep the Child Cerkl’s audience: This disables Audience Control from the Parent Cerkl AND keeps/communicates to the previously assigned Audience Segment.

  • Disable control and Remove the Child Cerkl’s audience: This disables Audience Control from the Parent Cerkl AND removes the Audience Members that were previously assigned through a Segment in the Parent Cerkl.

Selecting either of these controls will disconnect the Child Cerkl from the Parent Cerkl. This means the Parent Cerkl will no longer update the Audience within the Child Cerkl. The Child Cerkl's Audience will instead be managed independently.

Independent Child Cerkls

If an audience is not managed, the Child Cerkl will appear under the tab labeled “Independent.” When you disable audience control, subscriber lists will no longer be updated through the Parent Cerkl, and you can update the Subscriber list directly inside the Child Cerkl.

If you would like to enable Audience Controls for a Child Cerkl that is not managed, click Enable Audience Control.

Important: When you enable Audience Control, the current Audience inside of the Child Cerkl will be removed.

The Audience will be replaced by Subscribers inside the Segment you chose to connect to your Child Cerkl. Once the Child Cerkl moves back to "Managed," the Subscriber list can only be changed in the Parent Cerkl.

Can I Add New Subscribers to A Managed Child Cerkl?

No. Your Managed Child Cerkl cannot have audience members that are not in the Parent.

In order to add Subscribers to your Child Cerkl Audience, you will need to import the new Subscribers in your Parent Cerkl, then add them to an assigned Segment.

Managed Child Instances still have the ability to import a list of Subscribers to a new or existing Manual Segment, but email addresses that are not already Subscribed will be ignored.
