Subject lines are the first impression that your subscribers receive on your content, we want to make sure that it's an awesome one!
By helping you personalize your subject lines through our software, we consider several steps with each newsletter we create:
1) What are the recipients interests? What content matches their interests that will be included in their email?
2) If yes, is the lead story for that person significant based on their past behavior? If the answer is yes, Cerkl uses the lead story headlines as their subject line, as seen below.
3) If the lead story matches their interests but isn't a clear certainty, Cerkl shows them the matching topics, which often creates the subject line of "In this issue: X, Y, Z + 5 other stories" as seen below.
4) If Cerkl doesn't know anything at all about this person because it's their first email and they have yet to personalize, they'll receive a generic subject line such as "What's trending at JFC" or "The 8 most popular stories in the past 2 weeks," as seen below.
Just as a reminder: You can choose to never show the lead story headline as the subject line by going to Settings > Automated Email > Other Settings > Default Subject Line.
Interesting Fact: In our testing, using the lead story headline as the subject line produced a 9% higher open rate over "In this issue" and a 21% higher open rate over a generic subject line (e.g. "What's trending..."). This drives home the importance of personalization!
